The Mount Vernon Police Department continues to accept applications for the position of
Lateral Police Officer. In December 2022, the Mount Vernon Common Council approved an ordinance allowing a
$10,000
hiring bonus to be given to qualifying lateral police officers. This lateral bonus will be paid in $5,000 increments at the successful completion of year 1 and year 3, respectively. Qualifying lateral officers will also be eligible to receive an accelerated pay increase of $2,000 after successful completion of the FTO program.
To be a qualifying lateral officer, you must: 1) Be an Indiana Tier I Certified Officer, without restriction, as defined by ILEA, prior to application with the MVPD; or be a graduate of an academy recognized by ILEA to be a Tier I Basic Training Academy and must have completed the Indiana training requirement waiver process (and have written confirmation of the waiver issued by ILEA) prior to applying with the MVPD. 2) Be or have been employed as an active, fully sworn, full-time law enforcement officer with full powers of arrest with a state, county or local municipality law enforcement agency within (1) year from the date of application with the MPVD; and 3) Cannot have been previously employed by the MVPD in any capacity for five (5) years prior to the date of applying with the MVPD.
The Mount Vernon Police Department is also accepting applications for the position of
Police Officer (without previous experience). Applications are being accepted on a continual basis until a hiring process can begin.
The benefits for the Mount Vernon Police Department include:
Starting pay of
$59,577 with $2,000.00 increase upon completion of one year probation period, plus annual city increase.
Annual shift differential pay is $1,000 for second shift, $1,500 for split shift, and $2,000 for third shift. Longevity pay of $504 annually
(this is aggregate each year; i.e. in year 2 you would receive $1,008, year 3 you would receive $1,512, and so on) up to 20 years of service. Officers receive vacation days, sick days, as well as personal days. Duty belt and accessories, weapons, and body armor provided by the MVPD.
A clothing allowance of $1,000 per year. Take home car is provided. Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance is offered. Life Insurance policy is provided by the City.
