Hello, my name is Stephen "Steve" B. Loehr and I am the Mayor of Mount Vernon. I am a native of Mount Vernon and I have lived in this community my entire life. I have been married to my wife, Tammy, for over 35 years and we have one adult son. Before becoming Mayor I worked at SABIC/GE for 42 years and have been retired the past 4 1/2 years. I also spent the last 25 years coaching swimming from Age Group to High School, a sport that I continue to follow and support. These life endeavors have helped me  to utilized a creative problem solving approach, emphasizing fact finding, exploring alternatives, and maintaining an open mind until a decision is reached. I will continue to use this approach in dealing with current and future challenges and opportunities for community growth and development. I want to ensure and improve the quality of life for the residents, current and future, by balancing residential, business & environmental interest in a fiscally responsible manner.

We have a lot to be proud of here in Mount Vernon. We have completed the Riverfront Revitalization making this a destination to meet friends and enjoy family activities. The Ohio River has been a focal point in our community since the McFadin family settled here in 1806. The second weekend in September, Mount Vernon celebrates their heritage with the” River Days Festival”. The City obtained an INDOT Award to build a “Walking/Bicycle Trail” thru the city. The trail begins at the riverfront and travels Main Street to end at 6th Street. This project along with the demolition of two deteriorating buildings has made Main Street a much more welcoming area and has given us an opportunity for continued growth.

Mount Vernon is proud of its schools and feels their major key for success is parent and student involvement. Not only do their students excel in the classroom, the schools provide many extra-curricular activities for the students to participate in.

Mount Vernon has a wide diversity of businesses, including agribusinesses, pharmaceutical, plastic and petroleum. It is home to the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon which is a 1000-acre facility with 11 tenants. This port is the eighth largest inland port in the country. We also are surrounded by many other major industries: Sabic IP, Astra Zeneca, Babcock & Wilcox, GAF, CountryMark, Warehouse Services Inc. and ADM Milling just to name a few.
